It always amazes me that I can walk into someone's room, calmly discuss the death sentence they've just been handed, and then go back to sleep. It's an adaptive thing. It took me ten minutes to work up the nerve to go in there in the first place, but once the deed is done, I can drift off easily.
It is never good when your arm wakes you up by doing the tomahawk chop on its own. It is also never good to have a chest X-ray that looks like this man's chest X-ray looks. I've seen one like it before. It's the X-ray of postobstructive pneumonia, which is the X-ray of lung cancer. Coupled with a CT scan that shows brain lesions even I can pick out, there is no good news to be had.
If you don't mind, he says, laughing a bit, I'd like some time to work up my nerve before you check my prostate. No complaints there. I'd just as soon let him cope with the news I've already heaped on him today.

My grandmother's memorial service is today. I will have gotten at least some sleep, which is good. More than I expected.
