Oh, what a boost! - Nobody wears a white coat any more... — LiveJournal
...a tribute to becoming a doctor.
Oh, what a boost!
Drove down this morning - I'll tell you later about this weekend's adventures and why ecchikun is such a darling man - and got in early enough for lunch and half an hour or something else. Was going to go over to the building and fiddle with the wireless or study (63.8% on two consecutive NMS exams means I need to learn something more to do well; I should look back a few years and see how I was doing then) but I decided to check my mail.

Quarter-fold green and white paper: our evaluations. Too early for psych - it must be Medicine. I unfolded it.
Grade: H

Honors pass in Medicine, O Best Beloved. I am so thrilled. And comments:

Inpatient staff: "Very solid performance, excellent written histories/physicals, good differential, and appropriate thought process. Good planning and interpretation of data; reads up on patients. Will advise to continue reading; should excel in field of choice."
Inpatient chief resident: "Nicole was the best student overall this month. She has an excelent knowledge base and work ethic. I believe Nicole's driven attitude toward medicine will lead her to success in the future."
Outpatient staff: "Excellent knowledge base. Very motivated and conscientious. Enjoys providing medical care. Shows compassion with higher than expected ability."

I was the best student on the rotation? Hardly. I'm so happy I'm bouncing right now, O Best Beloved. I am wonderfully happy.

Off to lecture, then home to S's to pack up my car. Tomorrow night after an exam and a meeting with the FMSIG planning group, I go home for a month - I won't be back to Indianapolis for two months, except to check my mail. I love fourth year.

now feeling:: ecstatic ecstatic

Re: woot!

I'll be with the FP residents in FW first :) Cheap care, those residency programs.

Oh, and psychiatry said if you're looking for neuro or psych without huge bills to look at the U of Chicago residency programs.

*looks to see which lj comment this was from.

I'm fine, Paul's in California working at jpl for the summer, but I get to see him in 11 days 3 hours 29 minutes and 30 seconds. I go visit him, then we go back to wheaton. I'm a little stressed about all the money going out for the wedding (Paul had promised me a ps2 for christmas if i get over 3.5, but he asked if we could wait until next year.) BAH. Looking forward to being back at Wheaton again.

Love the icon. :) I was browsing mine and realized I don't have very many "really happy" icons. Should fix that.

congratulations!! i am so happy for you!! this gives me hope! any words of wisdom for a newbie? (i'm on ob/gyn now)

The OB/Gyn rotation here at IUSM is notoriously brutal.
Some notes for anyone who's on call, ever:
1) Eat when there's food. Sleep when there's a bed and a half an hour. Set several alarms.
2) Always bring three things on call: 1 or 2 clean pairs of socks, a change of underwear, and a toothbrush. You can make yourself a whole new person at 2 AM with clean socks.

As far as third-year goes, remember it never gets easier, but it gets better. Learn to love your patients, even the annoying ones, because they'll be the ones you remember come test-time. Walk a fine line between brown-nosing and being lazy - I've found that just doing my best and being excited about medicine shows up well. Bleach your white coat, or at least wash it, once a month.

Go home and read about your patients from the day. When I did it, it helped. It also makes you look -really- good the next day. Also keep up on the latest stuff - UpToDate is your friend, if your school has an institutional subscription, and eMedicine.com is also good for quick reads.

(Oh, and half the boys in my class don't wash their coats, I think that's so gross.)

One more: Get -really- comfy shoes with good arch support. On surgical rotations, take prophylactic ibuprofen before long surgeries (your back will kill you otherwise) and always always always eat breakfast if you're going to scrub in. Helps a lot to reduce the faintiness.
